Explore with us one of the largest underground airports in Europe and a military airbase in the former SFRY Yugoslavia designed to accommodate 58 fighter jets, but also to survive direct attacks with nuclear weapons.

The abandoned military airbase is located on the border between the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina under the Plješevica mountain massif. The construction of the underground airport began in 1948 and lasted almost 20 years. SFRY Yugoslavia spent about 6 billion dollars on construction. It was one of the largest and most expensive military construction projects in Europe. The Željava air base was destroyed during the Homeland War (1991-1995), more than 56 tons of explosives were used, and the air base worth 6 billion dollars was completely devastated. Today, the military airbase is reminiscent of the enormous strength of the former Yugoslav People's Army.
